Winter Hook Ups and Brown Trout

I had a fun day on Super Bowl Sunday tight lining on a small stream.  The takes were extremely subtle, but once I had figured out a solid pattern, I had four fish on in about 30 minutes. I brought two to the net, and the one that got away will haunt me until I’m able to get back to this river. First brown on this cold February day. When I tight line, I allow the flies to sink/drift and…

Fall Fishing at the Swift River

For the last few days, I’ve been visiting family in Massachusetts after a long time quarantining.  On Saturday our plans were open, so I paid a visit to a stream where I’ve spent a lot of time fishing, the Swift River in Belchertown, Massachusetts.  It’s hard to believe, but it’s been at least a year (maybe two?) since I’ve fished there.  It’s interesting to see how the river has changed.  Trees have fallen, creating new habitat and flows. The riverbed…

Late Summer Trip to the Catskills

A few weeks ago, my wife and I took a late summer trip to the Catskills. I’ve been wanting to go visit there for years, and finally set aside time for a trip. We stayed in a cabin near the Roscoe area, which is known as “Trout Town, USA”. I know there are probably a lot of towns that claim to be fishing towns, but very few get to claim the title of being the birthplace of American fly fishing….

Fly Fishing the Farmington River in April

It’s Saturday again, and here I am standing at the edge of the Farmington River.  It’s April 25th and another beautiful day out.  This April has been unique in a lot of ways.  We talk about COVID-19 much in the same way we used to talk about the weather.  And speaking of the weather, we’ve had some strange days as well.  One weekend I awoke to snow, only to see it evaporated in time for lunch. When I arrived at…

Farmington River Fishing Report

What a weird world we’re living in.  No one could have imagined the changes that would be taking place in 2020 with the COVID-19 pandemic.  I consider myself one of the lucky ones.  I have the option to travel safely to a quiet stream and listen to the carefree sound of birds and moving water.  When I look at the fish, waterfowl, and all the other wildlife I see, the world hasn’t changed for them.  Life goes on. Although not…

Morgan Run Fishing Update

This week I took another trip to Morgan Run.  The fishing was good and the trout seem to be spread out evenly in the Klee Mill area. The flows were at a good level and the water remained clear despite the rain we’ve had lately.  I caught a number of trout above and down below the bridge, and nymphing was the name of the game! I used a dark stonefly pattern in size 16 with a rainbow warrior inspired dropper…

Spring Fly Fishing on the Gunpowder River, Maryland

Spring is here in the Mid-Atlantic. We’ve had a full week of sunshine with temperatures reaching almost 80 degrees on a handful of days. The trout stockings of early Spring have been in full swing, and I’ve spent most of my fishing days chasing these trout in February and March. One of the last weekends in March, I fished the Morgan Run boulders area off Klee Mill Road, and caught several brown trout on nymphs. The highlight of that trip…

Spring Fly Fishing in Maryland

The weather has finally started improving so I decided to take advantage of one of our warm April days in the DC area. The temperatures were approaching 70 degrees when I arrived at a local Maryland stream. I’ve always stayed away from streamer fishing, but lately, I’ve decided to work on my presentation. I wondered if my lack of interest is a result of my lack of streamer skills, or if I truly don’t like fishing those flies. I’d say…

Fly fishing the Little Patuxent River in Maryland

This weekend I took a short drive over to the Little Patuxent River in Maryland. It’s only a 30-minute drive from DC, so it’s a good option for a quick outing to target trout. I’ve fished it twice now and caught at least a dozen small rainbows on each outing. They stocked it in early February, and I can’t imagine that these fish stay in the stream for long. I parked near the trailhead just outside of the historic Savage…

Fishing Morgan Run in Maryland

I had the day off on October 8th and decided to go fishing at Morgan Run.  Morgan Run is about an hour outside of DC and is managed as a catch and return fishery in select sections of the stream. I started off at the boulders section off Klee Mill Road.  There were quite a few people hiking and wading into the water, but I didn’t see any other fisherman in this section.   I also arrived mid-day, which isn’t…
