Fishing The Squannacook River

Fishing The Squannacook River

I planned on traveling to the Millers on Saturday, but decided to take a detour and ended up fishing the Squannacook River.  This stream has been on my radar for a few years, but I haven’t been able to pry myself away from the streams in western mass.  I live in the Boston area, so the proximity to this river is appealing.  While driving down route 2, I thought of the Squannacook, and decided to save myself driving time and…

October day at the Swift River

October day at the Swift River

I decided to spend another October day at the swift river. The idea of landing that huge brown proved to be too much of a draw.  I did see the brown a couple of times, but it was moving around and seemingly not interested in flies.  I did however manage to catch a wide variety of trout. There was an endless population of rainbow trout there to take a fly.  I think I ended up catching more bows than brook…

A forgotten stream with wild trout

A forgotten stream with wild trout

Part of my family has lived in the same 5 square miles for close to a century.  We knew a local pond by the name of the old farmer who once owned all the land surrounding it.  When his family sold that land half a century ago, a developer named it after the neighborhood they built on the land.  It was always interesting to me how one could gauge a person’s time in the area by the name they used…

Sunday at the Swift

Sunday at the Swift

A good friend of mine was in town visiting this weekend, and mentioned he’d like to try fly fishing.  I’ve taught quite a few people how to fly fish over the years, and I’m always excited for the opportunity to teach someone new.  It feels great to share my passion with someone, and to see them feel the same excitement I do when they hook a big trout.  With all the recent rain, we headed over to the swift on…

Small Stream, Big Trout

Small Stream, Big Trout

Before the downpour of rain on Friday, I was able to make it out to a small stream.  We’ve been getting a ton of rain over the last few days, and a lot of freestone rivers in Massachusetts are well above their typical flows, which makes wading difficult.  On one hand, I’m anxious to fish the Millers river and the Westfield River in Chesterfield, but I’m also thankful for the amount of rain we’re receiving.  I hope this will help…

More on my Favorite Dry and Dropper Rig for the Swift River

More on my Favorite Dry and Dropper Rig for the Swift River

Over the weekend, I hit the swift river below route 9 and caught several trout on my favorite dry dropper rig.  It’s fairly simple rig and consists of two flies that are easy to tie.  I had success with rainbows and brook trout on the same two flies.  The brook trout alternated between taking the dry fly or emerger, and the rainbows seemed to prefer the smaller emerger fly in a size 30. Here I am fishing to some risers…

Small Stream Fly Fishing in Eastern Massachusetts

Small Stream Fly Fishing in Eastern Massachusetts

On Memorial Day I decided to work in a relaxing afternoon of fishing.  I currently live in eastern Massachusetts, and I didn’t want to travel too far to fling some flies.  I decided to try a stream that’s not far from me, which I had heard held trout.  After about a hour of trying a few spots, I caught a strong willed brown trout.  This stream can tend to get a little warm this time of year, so I tried…
