Winter Flies for the Swift River and Millers River

Winter Flies for the Swift River and Millers River

Winter time is here and fly tying is in full swing.  I recently stocked up on more hooks and materials and wanted to share a fly that’s been producing for me on two rivers in massachusetts.  These two happen to be closest to me, but I’m sure they’d work equally well on other New England streams.

Hook : #16-20 nymph

Body: Gray dubbing with gold tinsel

Hackle: Hungarian Partridge

This fly is essentially a Hare’s ear with soft hackle added, and I like to dub the collar with orange dubbing before tying it off.  I use non-lead wire to add weight to the body and use matte black, gold, and silver beads interchangeably.
