Swift River Fly Fishing

Swift River Fly Fishing

Last Saturday I hit the Swift River in Belchertown while the flows were still low at around 50 cfs.  I fished south of the Route 9 bridge, and as many people know, below the bridge is home to a huge population of wild Brook trout. Anyhow, I had luck all day with both dry and wet flies, and my largest Brook Trout of the day was caught by a streamer I tied to imitate Brook trout fry.  I thought the…

Small Stream Fly Fishing in Eastern Massachusetts

Small Stream Fly Fishing in Eastern Massachusetts

On Memorial Day I decided to work in a relaxing afternoon of fishing.  I currently live in eastern Massachusetts, and I didn’t want to travel too far to fling some flies.  I decided to try a stream that’s not far from me, which I had heard held trout.  After about a hour of trying a few spots, I caught a strong willed brown trout.  This stream can tend to get a little warm this time of year, so I tried…

Fly fishing the Westfield River in Chesterfield, MA

Fly fishing the Westfield River in Chesterfield, MA

I headed over to the East Branch of the Westfield River last Saturday to try to catch some trout.  I have little experience on this river, but I appreciate the solitude and  natural beauty one can find there. There is a long dirt road which leads from the Chesterfield Gorge, and follows several…

While this wasn’t specifically a trout fishing trip, I managed to…

Swift River, MA Fishing Report – March 31, 2016

Swift River, MA Fishing Report – March 31, 2016

On Thursday, I went to the swift river in Massachusetts.  I’ve fished this river many times, and it almost never disappoints when it comes to catching fish.  I caught around 10 rainbow trout, and 1 brook trout when I moved further downstream.  In my experience, the brook trout like to hang out on the lower section of the river south of Cady lane during the summer.  During the winter months, I imagine they travel downstream past the Cold Spring Road…
